Shifting Metaphors: Activism as a Path to Awakening
A Meditation Retreat with
Rev. H. Ryūmon Gutiérrez Baldoquín
June 13 - 15, 2008
Smith College, Northampton, MA
$150 double / $200 single room (meals included)
Limited need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Buddha was about finding solutions to the problems of human suffering.
Compassionate social action requires us to step onto a path of activism where the focus shifts from committing to a cause, to committing to the well being of all people. To experience such shift of focus, participants will engage in meditation practice, receive teachings, and explore a model for cultural healing.
Cradled by Noble Silence, we will enter the practices of Zazen (sitting meditation), Kinhin (moving meditation), Dharma talks, Body Movement and Wisdom (talking) Circles through stillness, spaciousness and community exploration.
Although contemplative experience is not required to attend, participants are asked to take on these practices for the duration of the retreat.
This is a residential retreat. In an effort to build community, participants are required to stay on the Smith College campus.
This retreat is co-sponsored by the Smith College School for Social Work, Dragon Gate Zen (San Francisco, CA), the Zen Center on Main Street (Northampton, MA), and the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society.
Rev. H. Ryūmon Gutiérrez Baldoquín, a priest in the Soto Zen lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, is a disciple of Zenkei Blanche Hartman Roshi and a student of Acharya Pema Chödrön. She is the editor of Dharma, Color and Culture: New Voices in Western Buddhism, and founder and teaching guide to Dragon Gate Zen, a temple without walls, supporting a community of lay practioners to transform the world one heart at a time.
